Specifically regarding social media algorithms which primary goal is to keep you engaged regardless of the content. Algorithm developers have used techniques similar to those employed by the gambling industry in order to keep users coming back for more (Burrell & Fourcade, 2021). Here’s an interesting video that is a bit more accessible than the article I have cited if you are interested.
